OUR FIVE-SENSE STRATEGY

Intentionally curating your client experience can be easy! The Experience Edit team can identify opportunities where you can level up to incorporate the sights, sounds, smells, tastes and touches that invite an emotional response to your brand.

sight

Is this a no-brainer? Maybe. But mostly, maybe not. Whether it’s your business, your house or your hometown, we often “get comfortable” and look a little less closely at what things “look like”. Unless, of course, company’s coming—then we hide all the dirty dishes, do a clean swipe of the desk or Windex the front door. We just get used to seeing things we see everyday.

But what if we looked at things every.single.day from the perspective of the visitor, in this case, your client? Things might look a little different. And this shouldn’t start and end with your lobby—it’s ALL the things you want people to “see”. What does your business “look” like? Quality? Or in need of an update?

sound

Ohhhh such a good one! We tend to forget how things “sound” in your business…is the phone ringing ringing ringing before going to voicemail while the client sitting in the lobby is left thinking: no wonder it took me two days to get a return call. Are your reception team members positive and welcoming, or is there gossipy chatter about a guest once they hang up the phone, leaving your client thinking: I hope they don’t talk about me like that. Is there upbeat and on brand music playing or is it the news, which, sadly, is a whole lot of negative energy these days.

The sound of your business is a great place to project your culture. And when hearing isn’t an option, how does it “sound” to your guests that rely on another form of communication. Welcoming? Let’s check.

Smell

There’s a reason guests at Walt Disney World buy those chocolate chip cookies on Main Street. And my oh my, the sweet smell of bubble gum at the Cosmopolitan on the Las Vegas strip. There’s plenty of research correlating the sense of smell to our memories… and it’s SUCH an easy win. Let’s give your office the sniff test, shall we?

Personal case study: On my cross-country road trip I stopped for an overnight at the historic Hotel Andaluz in downtown Albuquerque. I am not kidding when I tell you that I sat in that beautiful lobby for an hour gabbing on the phone with a friend and afterwards was compelled to ask the front desk what that absolutely perfect scent was. They change it regularly so they unfortunately, couldn’t tell me. BUT YUMMY! It’s the small stuff. I would go back to any of these places because of the memory attached to my sense of smell.

taste

No, we’re not asking you to lick the counter. But why not incorporate some local flavor into the guest experience? The Experience Edit has plenty of tricks up our sleeve to tap into the makers and creators in your own backyard. And please oh please let’s level up on the foodie experience. We can do better!

Another thought, if I’m hungry sitting in your meeting…I’m no longer listening. So have things on hand to satisfy the hunger pains. Chances are, you’ll have your client better engaged, their screaming kiddos quieted down and a better client experience.

TOUCH

Ok, even the dirtiest of industries (or even the most sterile) need a touch-friendly experience. For all of you in between, this is totally do-able. Find a way to incorporate some interesting solutions into your workplace—paper, finishings and furniture are a simple answer. But let’s not stop there.

When your guests reach for your business card, marketing materials or other correspondence, do they feel the investment you’re making in your brand? When they sit on the toilet (because we all do)….and I’ll stop there, but you know where I’m going. When they walk from A to B, are they slipping and sliding on a greasy floor or my oh my is that sticky floor making them cringe? The brief moment to make a first impression using the sense of touch can often make or break your reputation. And you know what they say, you only get one chance to make a first impression.
